Yes,
Sutherland has its own Jurassic Park! A mile inland from the
village of Brora, forming part of the banks of the River
Brora, an exposed
jurassic cliff face has the village highlighted on every
geologist's map. There isn't much chance of finding a T Rex
however as this cliff was undersea at the time, in a marine
environment.
The most common fossils are Belemnite guards and Ammonite
shells
This site has been designated a Site of Special Scientific
Interest (SSSI), which means it is illegal to hammer or
collect fossils directly from the cliff face. Fossil
collecting is only permitted from the boulders along the
riverbank downstream of the exposed cliffs.
Please be aware that
during periods of heavy rain the river levels can make
viewing or collecting fossils difficult and potentially
dangerous. Do not attempt to access the cliffs during
spates.
The rock in these exposed cliffs dates from the latter part of
Middle Jurassic, specifically the Callovian stage, which was
quite a few years ago! The presence of ammonites and drift
wood among the fossils indicates this was a marine
environment close to the land.
